How can weight loss help to manage diabetes?

Diabetes is a complex condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Managing blood sugar levels is crucial, and one of the most effective strategies, for those with ‘type two diabetes’, is weight loss.
Below are a list of points on how weight loss can positively impact your ability to manage diabetes and your overall health.
1. Improved insulin sensitivity
One of the primary benefits of weight loss is improved insulin sensitivity. Excess body fat, particularly around the abdomen, can lead to greater insulin resistance, where the body’s cells become less responsive to insulin.
Losing weight can help your body use insulin more effectively, lowering blood glucose levels, and reducing the risk of complications associated with diabetes.
2. Improved blood glucose control
Research suggests that even a modest weight reduction of 5-10% can result in significant improvements in blood sugar levels. This intern can reduce the need for medication, and lower the risk of developing complications associated with diabetes.
3. Reduced risk of heart disease
Individuals with diabetes are at a higher risk for cardiovascular diseases. Weight loss can improve cholesterol levels, reduce blood pressure, and lower the risk of heart disease. A healthier weight promotes better blood circulation and overall cardiovascular health, which is vital for people with diabetes.
4. Enhanced physical activity
Losing weight often leads to increased physical activity. Regular exercise not only helps in maintaining weight loss, but also improves blood sugar control. Physical activity can enhance insulin sensitivity, and help in the regulation of blood glucose levels. It can also boost mood and energy levels, making it easier to maintain a healthier lifestyle.
5. Decreased inflammation
Excess body fat can lead to chronic inflammation, which is linked to insulin resistance and other metabolic disorders. Weight loss can help reduce this inflammation, improving overall health, and reducing the risk of complications with diabetes.
6. Psychological benefits
Weight loss can have profound psychological benefits. Many individuals with diabetes experience stress, anxiety, and/or depression related to their condition.
Achieving weight loss goals can help boost self-esteem and provide a sense of control over one’s health, leading to improved mental well-being.
Recommended methods to losing weight
Weight loss through lifestyle changes including exercise and diet, is the recommended treatment of choice in the majority of diabetes related cases. However, weight-loss medication may be prescribed if lifestyle changes have failed, and certain criteria is met.
Many different types of anti-obesity medicines have been tested in clinical trials, but only a small number have been recommended by the NHS as safe and effective for use in weight management. These are Orlistat, Liraglutide and Semaglutide.
Orlistat works by preventing approximately one third of the fat, from the food you eat, from being absorbed. Whereas Liraglutide and Semaglutide work by making you feel fuller and less hungry. For more information go to the NHS website.
In summary
Weight loss can have a positive influence for those living with diabetes. By improving insulin sensitivity, enhancing blood sugar control, and fostering a healthier lifestyle, losing weight not only supports diabetes management, but also promotes overall well-being.
