New research fellowship ‘pilot’ collaboration between the PROMPT Maternity Foundation and Limbs & Things Ltd
From late 2023, Bristol based Dr Katherine Lattey, a research fellow currently working for the PROMPT Maternity Foundation (PMF), has become the first PMF/Limbs & Things (L&T) Fellow to pilot a new research collaboration between the two Bristol based organisations. PMF and L&T have been working together informally for many years to develop simulation models and training tools to improve care for women and babies during obstetric emergencies.
Katherine is an obstetric registrar, currently ST5 level, who also works clinically at North Bristol Trust (Southmead Hospital). She has been working with PMF for the past year, supporting the production of multi-media training materials for the PROMPT Annual Update and PROMPT Global programmes as well as running hands-on simulation training with L&T’s PROMPT Flex manikin.
In addition to their long history of collaborative innovation and research, PMF and L&T recognise the importance of evaluating the effectiveness of simulation training. PMF recommends the use of the PROMPT Flex manikin for shoulder dystocia (SD) training that has been associated with important reductions in birth injuries in the UK and internationally. More recently, PMF and L&T have co-developed new tools for training in the management of impacted fetal head at caesarean births, which is a growing area of litigation in NHS Maternity care.
Mark James, CEO of the PROMPT maternity foundation commented:
“We are delighted that two bodies committed to improving outcome in healthcare are working together and formalising their relationship specifically looking at improving outcomes in maternity care.”
